RC Helicopter Float on Water

Ever feel boring to fly on your backyard or grassland? Or do you notice that whenever there is a pool or lake, it is tempting to fly above it. Fun always come with challenges, time to try something new!

Heli float on water

Most of us afraid of dunking the helicopter in water, but some said all electronics function well after the dive?! Anyway, it can only be true for pure water without any other substances conduct electricity, just like the case of Breaking in Brush Motor. Read the rest of this entry »

Why Training Gear

Training Gear is always a must for beginners to start flying securely. As crashes is inevitable for this hobby, but with the training kits, your heli will have a longer life-span.

helicopter training gear

Here are some pros and cons for installation of training gear:

Advantages

  • Reduce chances of blade strike
  • Reduce the odds and damages of crashes
  • Shock absorption
  • Lower cost for replacement parts
  • Higher stability

Where does Throttle Ratchet come from?

If you unscrew the back of the transmitter (Tx), you will find a metal ribbon behind the throttle stick. And there is usually a V-shape notch on the metal ribbon and contact with the teeth on gear which create the strong friction against your throttle input. And this is good for beginners, as the stick will stay where you hand off.

But some pilots hate this, because sometimes rc helicopter requires very precise throttle input for hovering. Sometimes will be annoyed that 1 click up would rise your heli and 1 click down would make it go down. So, here are few simple modifications to get rid of it.

Sandwich a Plastic Strip

Here’s the Brooks’s DX7 AIR smooth throttle modification. Just cut some strips from plastic transparent packaging, then sandwich between the gears and metal spring. That’ s all!

Alternatively, some may slipped a piece of fuel tubing or heat shrink over the metal. Read the rest of this entry »

There’re cases about E-sky Honey Bee FP (Fixed Pitch) V2 4-in-1 ESC burnt after crashes, though it can be avoided by throttle down before crash. Yes, if and only if you are one of those advanced pilots. Hence, this time showing you the very simple, light weight and cheap(~$1) fuse mod for saving the expensive(~$40) 4in1. Of course, this modification is never limit to Honey Bee only.

Here’s one of the comment on this mod. : )

“And the fuse mod saved my 4-in-1! I accidentally pushed the throttle as I bent to pick the helicopter up from the ground and the blades whirred right into my fingers and legs. I guess I’m lucky it wasn’t a CP heli. Anyway, the blades jammed against me and the fuse blew. I’m so glad I put it in!”

How to install LED on RC helicopter?

Some remote control helicopters equipped with glittering LEDs once you bought it, but things seldom comes perfect. So, if you want to install LEDs or replace the color of LEDs, wish this guide able to help you.

What you are going to do is to create a simple circuit similar to the diagram shown below. The power for LEDs would be shared from a spare servo jack on the receiver or use a “Y” cable adapter with an existing servo. Read the rest of this entry »

Though brushless motor is a hyped trend for rc helicopter, still number of your collection are equipped as brush motors. Don’ t be sad, here is a guide to increase the power and efficiency of your brush motors by breaking-in.

The whole concept is easy to understand, is to wear the square shape of brushes into round shape under a low-voltage, no-load situation.

And the process will be happened in this way. Start the motor with less than 1/2 operating voltage for 1-2 hours, and break-in the motor by make it spin in the direction as it will turn. By connecting 2 alkaline AA cell in series and let it run dry, there will be enough electricity for the motor mods.

Problems on Stock Brushed Motors

Since most of the heat comes from the resistance of carbon soot which is non conductive. This imply energy waste on heat instead of power of your heli. The carbon buildup is also the cause of the dropping fight times. There is even cases reported that it could result in burn-out to ESC or battery by causing current spikes.

Syma S006 Alloy Shark

Many Syma S006 Alloy Shark pilots will face similar problem as follows, that the rc helicopter keep spinning after it lift. Or when you suppose it is under control and push the stick forward, it start spinning again. Meanwhile, you can not fix this only by trimming on transmitter.

Did your Alloy Shark S006 crash in this way?

Countless Blade mSR pilots experienced Toilet Bowl Effect (TBE), if there is a ranking for TBE among remote control helicopters, then mSR must be the champion. See?

toilet bowl effect

What is Toilet Bowl Effect (TBE)?

It describe a helicopter flying as if inside a toilet bowl, can hardly be controlled against an invisible downward whirlpool. Without pilot input, it still move rapidly in circle of 10cm-1m diameter.

How to solve Toilet Bowl Effect?

Since there are couple of causes were being found, we have to investigate the possible causes one by one before we fix it. Read the rest of this entry »

Canopy Painting

Very often, rc heli pilots get the first impression of the heli by it’ s outlook which is mainly determinant by the canopy. Unfortunately, some heli manufacturer seems get used to do the art work by engineers. Let’ s have a look at some state-of-art canopy painting.

Solutions is always more than problems. The blade mSR swashplate mod with shortened arms mentioned earlier does work, however, here is a shortcut for it! This modification will improve your heli as good as previous Shortened Swashplate Arms Mod, in the way that enhancing more cyclic throw and response.

The idea is simple, just replace the stock swashplate with 4#3B metal swashplate! This is how it looks like after mod.
